Praying in Tongues
Praying in tongues is prayer to God in a language supplied by the Holy Spirit rather than learned through natural understanding. Bruce Tentzer teaches that this personal prayer language strengthens believers in faith and allows the Spirit to help them pray beyond the limits of their own knowledge. The believer speaks; the Holy Spirit gives the utterance.
This teaching is drawn from Bruce Tentzer’s book, Jesus: Baptizer in the Holy Spirit.
What happens when you pray in tongues?
In Jesus: Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, Bruce explains speaking in tongues as a supernatural outflow of the baptism with the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 describes believers speaking as the Spirit supplied their utterance. Their voices were involved, but the language did not originate in their own learning or intellectual effort.
First Corinthians 14:2 identifies the direction of this prayer: it is addressed to God. The speaker may not understand the words, yet God understands. Bruce presents this biblical prayer language as personal communication with the heavenly Father, rather than speech intended to impress or instruct other people.
Let the Spirit help when words fall short
We do not always know what someone needs, what lies ahead, or how to express the burdens we carry. Bruce connects praying in the Spirit with Romans 8:26–27: the Holy Spirit helps our weakness and intercedes according to God’s will. Our limited understanding does not leave us without help in prayer.
First Corinthians 14:14 explains why the absence of mental understanding need not discourage the believer. Your spirit is praying even when your mind cannot translate the language. Bruce encourages trust in the Holy Spirit’s work rather than trying to construct or analyze every word before speaking.
Prayer that builds up your faith
Bruce brings together 1 Corinthians 14:4 and Jude 1:20 to explain spiritual strengthening. Praying in tongues builds up the believer’s inner life. He encourages continuing to use this gift in daily prayer, especially when discouragement, weariness, or uncertainty makes reliance on personal strength inadequate.
The purpose extends beyond receiving a memorable experience. In his teaching, a prayer language belongs within an ongoing, surrendered walk with Jesus. The Holy Spirit encourages and strengthens believers so they can live their faith and participate in the work of Christ.
Personal prayer and public tongues have different purposes
When studying tongues in the Bible, keep personal prayer distinct from the public gift of tongues in a congregation. Bruce draws on 1 Corinthians 14:18–19: Paul valued speaking in tongues while preferring understandable words when teaching the gathered church.
Public ministry must consider the hearers. Tongues in that setting should have an opportunity for interpretation so that others are built up. Personal prayer is directed to God. This distinction helps explain both Paul’s gratitude for tongues and his concern for love and order in worship.
Begin with confidence in Jesus
Bruce directs believers to Jesus as the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. Ask Him in faith, trust the Father’s goodness, and yield your own voice as the Spirit supplies the language. Then continue in prayer. The invitation is to receive His help and use what He gives, rather than depending only on your own vocabulary.
Scripture from the book
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
