Pentecost in Acts 2

Pentecost in Acts 2 records the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to baptize His followers with the Holy Spirit. The gathered believers were filled and began speaking in other tongues as the Spirit supplied their utterance. Bruce Tentzer explains this outpouring as the work of the risen Jesus, empowering His people and opening a continuing expression of Spirit-led prayer and praise.

This teaching is drawn from Bruce Tentzer’s book, Jesus: Baptizer in the Holy Spirit.

The promise before Pentecost

Acts 2 follows a promise Jesus had already given. In Acts 1:4–5, He instructed His disciples to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the Father’s promised baptism with the Holy Spirit. Bruce explains baptism as immersion: Jesus surrounds and fills the believer with the presence and power of the Spirit.

In Bruce’s teaching, this encounter is distinct from receiving the Holy Spirit at the new birth. The disciples already belonged to the risen Lord, yet Jesus told them there was more to receive. Pentecost therefore demonstrates His provision of supernatural empowerment for believers, rather than their ability to produce spiritual power themselves.

What happened when the Holy Spirit came?

Bruce describes the believers gathered together in prayer when the sound of a mighty rushing wind filled the house. Tongues as of fire appeared, and each person was filled with the Holy Spirit. These dramatic signs accompanied the fulfillment of the promise Jesus had told them to await.

His emphasis rests on the people receiving: all were filled. The account does not describe a few unusually gifted individuals having an experience while everyone else watched. Bruce calls attention to the whole gathering participating in the outpouring and its supernatural expression.

Speaking in tongues at Pentecost

Tongues in Acts 2 are connected directly with the Spirit’s activity. The believers used their own voices, while the Holy Spirit gave them the utterance. Bruce explains this as supernatural speech, not a language generated through natural ability or learned for the occasion.

This distinction helps readers understand both receiving and responding. The Spirit supplied the language; the believers spoke. Bruce connects speaking in tongues at Pentecost with a new expression of Spirit-led prayer and praise, and with the personal prayer language he encourages believers to continue using.

The risen Jesus poured out the Spirit

Peter’s explanation in Acts 2:32–33 places Jesus at the center. God raised Him from the dead and exalted Him to the Father’s right hand. The outpouring the people could see and hear came through Him. Bruce presents Pentecost as evidence of the living Lord actively ministering to His people.

Jesus baptizes in the Holy Spirit. The experience does not stand apart from Him or depend on a minister possessing spiritual power. Bruce directs the reader’s confidence to Christ Himself, the One who fulfills the Father’s promise.

Does the promise reach believers today?

Bruce reads Acts 2:38–39 as extending the promise beyond the first generation of the Church. Peter includes the hearers, their children, and those far away whom God would call. In Bruce’s teaching, the baptism in the Holy Spirit remains God’s provision for believers today: strength for faith, help in prayer, and power for a life yielded to Jesus.

Scripture from the book

1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
