Receiving the Baptism with the Holy Spirit
Receiving the baptism with the Holy Spirit begins with belonging to Jesus Christ. Bruce Tentzer teaches born-again believers to ask in faith, trust the heavenly Father’s goodness, and yield themselves to the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the Baptizer, and this empowering gift is received through faith rather than earned by becoming good enough.
This teaching is drawn from Bruce Tentzer’s book, Jesus: Baptizer in the Holy Spirit.
Begin with faith in the risen Jesus
In Jesus: Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, Bruce starts his instructions with Romans 10:9–10. A person must first be born again through faith in the risen Lord Jesus, confessing Him as Lord. The baptism with the Holy Spirit is a promise for people who already belong to Christ.
This matters when asking how to receive the Holy Spirit. Bruce distinguishes receiving the Spirit at salvation from the subsequent baptism in the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit baptism does not replace the new birth or become a way to earn salvation. First surrender your life to Jesus; then ask Him for the empowering gift He has promised.
Ask with confidence in the Father’s goodness
Luke 11:13 directs attention to the heavenly Father’s willingness to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Bruce encourages a believing request rooted in God’s character. Receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit involves trusting what the Lord has said, rather than trying to persuade Him to become generous.
His instructions are personal and practical: find a quiet place and ask the Father in Jesus’ name for the baptism with the Holy Spirit. Keep your confidence in Jesus Himself. He fulfills the promise; the power does not originate in your own effort or ability to create an experience.
Receive a gift you cannot earn
Bruce addresses the concern that a believer must straighten out every weakness before receiving. His teaching points in the other direction: the Holy Spirit supplies power to surrender to Christ and live faithfully. We need His help precisely because human strength is inadequate.
Being baptized in the Holy Spirit is therefore not a reward for reaching a level of personal perfection. It is a freely given gift. Come as a believer who needs the Lord’s power, ask in faith, and receive with a willing heart.
Yield your voice as the Spirit gives utterance
After asking, Bruce encourages believers to yield their voice, mouth, and lips to the Holy Spirit. The person speaks, while the Spirit supplies the new language. His book describes speaking in a new tongue as evidence of receiving this baptism.
He invites readers to begin by thanking God with their understanding and then speak the words the Holy Spirit gives. The response involves surrender. The language is received from the Spirit, rather than composed through intellectual effort.
You do not have to understand every word
First Corinthians 14:14 explains that the spirit prays while understanding is unfruitful. Bruce reassures readers that not understanding their prayer language is normal. Receiving and using this gift does not depend on mentally translating each word. Yield to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to pray through you. In Bruce’s teaching, this is God’s Spirit helping you pray for what you need.
Scripture from the book
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
