The Power of the Holy Spirit
The power of the Holy Spirit enables believers to make Jesus known and live in ways their own strength cannot sustain. Bruce Tentzer presents Holy Spirit empowerment as help for witness, prayer, faith, and godly living. In his teaching, the baptism in the Holy Spirit equips believers to participate actively in Christ’s purposes, with a life increasingly yielded to Him.
This teaching is drawn from Bruce Tentzer’s book, Jesus: Baptizer in the Holy Spirit.
Power to witness to the risen Jesus
Acts 1:8 connects the coming of the Holy Spirit with becoming witnesses to Jesus. Bruce emphasizes that the disciples already believed in Him, yet they still needed power from the Holy Spirit to testify of Him. Their mission required more than personal conviction or natural courage.
The Spirit gives boldness, strength, and supernatural ability to make Christ known. Bruce follows the outward movement described by Jesus, from Jerusalem through Judea and Samaria to the ends of the earth. This purpose continues for Spirit-filled believers today: taking part in the Lord’s work rather than watching others do it.
Dependence beyond natural ability
In the section explaining why believers need the baptism with the Holy Spirit, Bruce turns to Zechariah 4:6. Determination, knowledge, experience, and ability can still leave a person inadequate for what God calls them to do. The Holy Spirit supplies what human strength alone cannot provide.
This makes Holy Spirit power practical. It is needed to live faithfully, pray effectively, overcome weakness, and carry out Christ’s purposes. Bruce presents the Spirit’s empowerment as provision believers need for their calling, with dependence on God at the center of the Christian life.
Strength for prayer and faith
Bruce includes prayer beyond natural understanding among the reasons believers need this power. A personal prayer language belongs within that provision. He also identifies the building up of faith and receiving rest and refreshing as benefits of relying on the Holy Spirit.
The emphasis reaches beyond receiving a memorable experience. A Spirit-filled believer needs ongoing help in prayer and daily life. Bruce encourages readers to depend on the Spirit’s work where their understanding, strength, or courage is insufficient, allowing Him to strengthen their walk with Jesus.
Power expressed through surrendered living
Bruce connects spiritual maturity with yielding the tongue to the Holy Spirit. Learning to surrender speech is part of learning to live under His direction. The baptism with the Holy Spirit is therefore more than receiving a prayer language; it also brings power for godly living.
His explanation extends surrender to actions and thought life. Relying on the power of God through the Holy Spirit means trusting Him to lead instead of insisting on directing every part of life independently. Empowerment and surrender belong together in Bruce’s teaching.
An invitation to active participation
The book calls believers to a faith that moves into action through the Spirit’s help. Power to witness, strength in prayer, and a yielded life serve the purposes of Jesus. As you consider the baptism in the Holy Spirit, keep that purpose in view: receiving His help so you can live faithfully and make the risen Lord known.
Scripture from the book
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts.”
